{"id":5230,"date":"2017-08-17T16:19:01","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T16:19:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commercalert.wpengine.com\/?p=5230"},"modified":"2019-05-01T23:46:03","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T23:46:03","slug":"5230-2","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/news\/5230-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Advertisers decry Canada\u2019s proposed restrictions on marketing food to kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Advertisers decry Canada\u2019s proposed restrictions on marketing food to kids<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Globe and Mail<\/p>\n<p>SUSAN KRASHINSKY ROBERTSON<\/p>\n<p>A group representing Canadian advertisers is criticizing proposed restrictions on marketing food and beverages to children, saying that suggested changes to policy go too far.<\/p>\n<p>Health Canada\u2019s consultations on how it should approach restricting advertising \u201cunhealthy food and beverages\u201d to kids began in June and concluded this week. In its submission under the consultations, the Association of Canadian Advertisers said the proposals are \u201csignificantly overbroad\u201d and \u201cshould be reconsidered from the ground up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Health Canada\u2019s proposed policy changes would allow advertising of \u201chealthy\u201d foods including \u201cvegetables, fruit, whole grains and protein-rich foods \u2026 when processed or prepared with no added sodium, sugars or fat\u201d with a full list of foods exempt from restrictions to be provided later.<\/p>\n<p>It asked for comment on two options for restricted-food ads: those for foods with more than approximately 5 per cent of the daily value of saturated fat, sugars or sodium; or a slightly more lax restriction on foods with more than 15 per cent of those daily values. Either option would restrict items such as regular soda, ice cream, candies, most sugar-sweetened cereals, cheese and juice. The broader option would also restrict ads for foods such as granola bars, potato chips, French fries, and calorie-reduced cheese.
