Although the amendment did not receive enough votes to pass, the vote was a historic step.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sept. 10, 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0Activists rally over the course of the week in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/action.citizen.org\/p\/salsa\/event\/common\/public\/search.sjs?distributed_event_KEY=717\">more than a dozen<\/a>\u00a0cities around the country urging Republican senators to vote yes on the Democracy for All amendment, while the U.S. Senate continues the debate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Sept. 8, 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0U.S. Senate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=4276\">begins debate<\/a>\u00a0on the Democracy for All amendment. Activists rally outside the U.S. Capitol and deliver more than three million petition signatures in support of an amendment. So far, 16 states, approximately 550 cities and towns, and more than 160 former and current members of Congress have indicated support for an amendment. So has President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sept. 3, 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0Public Citizen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=4270\">releases a new bipartisan poll<\/a>\u00a0showing that voters across party lines overwhelmingly oppose\u00a0<em>Citizens United<\/em>\u00a0and strongly support a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision and curb the influence of money in politics. Notably, Republican and independent voters resoundingly reject anti-amendment arguments made by GOP leadership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Sept. 3, 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=4272\">Activists hold protests<\/a>\u00a0targeting both Democrats and Republicans who have yet to state their support for the Democracy for All amendment \u2013 50 senators support the amendment thus far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>July 10, 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=4242\">votes to bring S.J. Res. 19<\/a>, the Democracy for All amendment, to the full U.S. Senate for a vote in the fall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>July 1, 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0Activists nationwide hold\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=4238\">more than 100 events<\/a>\u00a0urging their U.S. senators to back a constitutional amendment to curb the flow of money into politics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>April 30, 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0U.S Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=4158\">announces<\/a>\u00a0that he will push for a vote on S.J. Res. 19, a constitutional amendment sponsored by U.S. Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) that would restore power to Congress and the states to control campaign spending.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>April 2, 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=4101\">The U.S. Supreme Court rules<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission<\/em>, striking down aggregate limits people can donate to candidates, political parties and political committees. More than 150 demonstrations in 41 states \u2013 spearheaded by Public Citizen \u2013 erupt in protest of<em>McCutcheon<\/em>\u00a0directly after the decision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Sept. 24, 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3984\">Support for a constitutional amendment reaches the one-third threshold<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 of states and members of Congress needed to amend the Constitution. In addition, nearly 500 cities, towns and counties \u2013 including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia \u2013 have called for an amendment, and more than 140 members of the 2013 Congress are sponsoring an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>July 4, 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0Oregon\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a016th state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>June 10, 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0Delaware\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a015th state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>May 31, 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0Illinois\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a014th state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>April 30, 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0Maine\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a013th state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>April 10, 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0West Virginia\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a012th state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Feb. 5, 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0Washington, D.C.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3804\">joins the call<\/a>\u00a0for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jan. 17, 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0Activists in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3798\">more than 75 towns and cities<\/a>\u00a0rally on the third anniversary of\u00a0<em>Citizens United<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dec. 19, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0Public Citizen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3785\">releases a report<\/a>\u00a0showing that election spending by outside groups in 2012 began to rival the amount spent by candidates and the national parties, suggesting that outside groups may become the dominant voices in coming election cycles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Nov. 14, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3762\">The \u201cDemocracy in Motion\u201d tour of six New York cities kicks off<\/a>. During the speaking tour, Public Citizen organizers and New York activists work to build grassroots support for a constitutional amendment and other measures to get big money out of politics. So far, 11 states and more than 350 communities have formally called for an amendment. In addition, 125 members of the 2012 Congress have expressed support for an amendment, as has President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Nov. 8, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0Public Citizen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3757\">releases analysis<\/a>\u00a0of data showing that outside groups spent more than $190 million on 2012\u2019s most competitive U.S. Senate races.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Nov. 6, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0Montana and Colorado\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">become<\/a>\u00a0the 10th and 11th states to call for an amendment. Voters in those states pass the ballot initiatives with over 70 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Nov. 2, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3752\">Analysis<\/a>\u00a0from Public Citizen links\u00a0<em>Citizens United<\/em>\u00a0to an increase in negative advertising in elections. Findings show that more than 85 percent of unregulated independent expenditures made by the 15 biggest outside groups in the 2012 election cycle financed negative messages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Oct. 18, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0New Jersey\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a0ninth state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Sept. 12, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0Connecticut\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a0the eighth state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Aug. 30, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3700\">At this point<\/a>, nearly 300 local cities, towns and counties call for a constitutional amendment. Seven state legislatures support a constitutional amendment, and 23 others introduce similar measures. In addition, 125 members of the 2012 Congress voice their support for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Aug. 29, 2012:\u00a0<\/strong>President<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3700\">\u00a0Barack Obama calls for constitutional amendment,<\/a>\u00a0as well as other measures that would combat the overwhelming flow of corporate money into elections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>July 31, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0Massachusetts\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a0the seventh state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>July 5, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0California\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.united4thepeople.org\/local.html\">becomes<\/a>\u00a0the sixth state to call for an amendment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>June 11, 2012:<\/strong>\u00a0Public Citizen and allies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/pressroom\/pressroomredirect.cfm?ID=3627\">organize Resolution Week<\/a>, aimed at passing local resolutions that call for a constitutional amendment the week of June 11.
