{"id":36366,"date":"2018-11-28T12:32:26","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T17:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/corporatepresidency.org\/?p=22892"},"modified":"2019-06-05T14:50:02","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T18:50:02","slug":"mr-trumps-unsafe-neighborhood-33-ways-trumps-cruel-policies-are-bad-for-americas-kids","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/news\/mr-trumps-unsafe-neighborhood-33-ways-trumps-cruel-policies-are-bad-for-americas-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Mr. Trump\u2019s Unsafe Neighborhood: 33 Ways Trump\u2019s Cruel Policies Are Bad for America\u2019s Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s impossible to forget the scenes of sobbing migrant children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/trumps-family-separation-policy-was-flawed-from-the-start-watchdog-review-says\/2018\/10\/01\/c7134d86-c5ba-11e8-9b1c-a90f1daae309_story.html?utm_term=.77da131eef6e\">separated <\/a>from their parents, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/nationworld\/ct-children-border-patrol-facility-20180617-story.html\">placed in cages<\/a>, running away from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2018\/11\/26\/these-children-are-barefoot-diapers-choking-tear-gas\/?utm_term=.c7fb403950ec\"> \u00a0clouds of tear gas<\/a>, cooped up in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/30\/us\/migrant-children-tent-city-texas.html\">tent city<\/a> and appearing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/08\/us\/migrant-children-family-separation-court.html?fbclid=IwAR3B36NLxTOJScTrhPhztvO4le_snoZ2dqacTr_NF8Dke0dSUGwv9VdWPK8\">court<\/a>\u00a0alone.<\/p>\n<p>These horrifying events show all too clearly how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/24\/politics\/government-accountability-office-family-separations-report\/index.html\">chaos-creating<\/a> Trump administration has turned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2018\/10\/trump-never-stopped-believing-in-his-child-separation-policy#~o\">cruelty <\/a>to children into official government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/18\/us\/politics\/migrant-children-detention-trump.html\">policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But President Donald Trump\u2019s anti-child policies are not limited to immigrants. They are emblematic of an administration whose antipathy to all children is apparent on virtually every issue, and especially so for low-income kids and children of color.<\/p>\n<p>From the environment to health care to education to product safety, the interests of the largest U.S. corporations are far more important to the Trump administration than the health, safety and well-being of America\u2019s children.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 33 ways Donald Trump, along with his corporate-allied cronies and ideological extremists, have put America\u2019s children at risk:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Undermined efforts to improve the quality of school lunches: <\/b>The Trump administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/health-experts-turn-their-noses-new-school-lunch-rule-n825051\">rolled back<\/a> the Obama administration\u2019s efforts to serve more nutritious foods to students, allowing chocolate milk and other sugary, salty, fatty foods that lead to obesity and poor health. Trump\u2019s agriculture secretary, Sonny Perdue, said that it \u201cdoesn\u2019t do any good to serve nutritious meals if they wind up in the trash can.\u201d but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2017\/11\/29\/hey-kids-you-can-soon-have-low-fat-flavored-milk-your-school-lunch\/905553001\/\">nutrition experts say<\/a> the rules put children\u2019s health at risk.<\/li>\n<li><b>Nixed protections for transgender students:<\/b> Only a month after taking office, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/22\/us\/politics\/devos-sessions-transgender-students-rights.html\">rescinded <\/a>an Obama-era position that transgender students can use bathrooms that correspond with students&#8217; gender identity. A year later, the U.S. Department of Education said it no longer would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/education\/wp\/2018\/02\/12\/education-department-will-no-longer-investigate-transgender-bathroom-complaints\/?utm_term=.68ce269f074f\">investigate <\/a>complaints filed by transgender students who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/08\/18\/transgender-students-betsy-devos-trump-education-department-743162\">denied <\/a>access to bathrooms. Most recently, the Trump administration has explored\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/21\/us\/politics\/transgender-trump-administration-sex-definition.html?action=click&amp;module=Top%20Stories&amp;pgtype=Homepage\">defining <\/a>gender as an unchangeable biological condition, a change that would exclude transgender people from civil rights protections.<\/li>\n<li><b>Faked concern about school shootings:<\/b> Trump did nothing after 17 high school students were gunned down in Parkland, Fla. Instead of action that would actually make schools safer, Trump proposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/22\/us\/politics\/trump-guns-school-shootings.html\">arm teachers<\/a>, and his administration set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/05\/us\/politics\/devos-guns-school-safety-commission.html\">sham commission<\/a> to study school safety issues that intentionally chose to ignore the role of guns in school violence. While Trump briefly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/powerpost\/democrats-rally-around-universal-background-checks-ahead-of-white-house-meeting\/2018\/02\/28\/13c4a5d2-1ca4-11e8-9de1-147dd2df3829_story.html?utm_term=.a651bde62811\">endorsed<\/a> some gun-control measures and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/powerpost\/democrats-rally-around-universal-background-checks-ahead-of-white-house-meeting\/2018\/02\/28\/13c4a5d2-1ca4-11e8-9de1-147dd2df3829_story.html?utm_term=.a40cf0174689\">observed <\/a>accurately that that the gun lobby has \u201cgreat power over\u201d Republicans, the Trump administration has avoided the\u00a0gun control issue, save for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/01\/politics\/trump-bump-fire-stocks\/index.html\">promised <\/a>ban on ultra-dangerous \u201cbump stocks\u201d which allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more quickly.<\/li>\n<li><b>Repealed education standards: <\/b>Early in the administration, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/education\/wp\/2017\/03\/27\/trump-signs-bills-overturning-obama-era-education-regulations\/?utm_term=.62d363d3e934\">signed<\/a> measures getting rid of standards for teacher-training programs and accountability rules designed to ensure that schools serve poor and minority students.<\/li>\n<li><b>Placed protections for minority students at risk: <\/b>The Education Department, under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/education\/commentary\/time-secretary-devos-rescind-obama-era-school-discipline-policies\">pressure <\/a>from conservative groups, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/20\/us\/politics\/devos-education-department-civil-rights.html\">dismissing <\/a>large numbers of civil rights complaints and evaluating whether to <a href=\"http:\/\/educationpost.org\/betsy-devos-on-the-verge-of-removing-civil-rights-protections-for-students-of-color\/\">eliminate <\/a>Obama administration\u2019s 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ocr\/letters\/colleague-201401-title-vi.html\">school discipline guidance<\/a>, which encourages school officials to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/press-releases\/persistent-disparities-found-through-comprehensive-civil-rights-survey-underscore-need-continued-focus-equity-king-says\">address <\/a>the disproportionately large number of students of color who are suspended and expelled, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2018\/04\/betsy-devos-is-making-it-easier-for-schools-to-send-black-kids-like-this-13-year-old-girl-to-jail\/\">jailed<\/a>. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/20\/us\/politics\/betsy-devos-congress-racial-disparities.html\">called <\/a>for $1 million proposed cut to the Education Department\u2019s civil rights office, a move a House Democrat described a \u201cslap in the face\u201d for minority students.<\/li>\n<li><b>Separated children from their parents, put them in cages and held them in detention camps:<\/b> Trump\u2019s cruel and unnecessary family separation policy resulted in thousands of kids being \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/trumps-family-separation-policy-was-flawed-from-the-start-watchdog-review-says\/2018\/10\/01\/c7134d86-c5ba-11e8-9b1c-a90f1daae309_story.html?utm_term=.77da131eef6e\">separated <\/a>from their parents, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/nationworld\/ct-children-border-patrol-facility-20180617-story.html\">placed in cages<\/a>, held in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/30\/us\/migrant-children-tent-city-texas.html\">tent city in Texas<\/a> and appearing alone in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/08\/us\/migrant-children-family-separation-court.html?fbclid=IwAR3B36NLxTOJScTrhPhztvO4le_snoZ2dqacTr_NF8Dke0dSUGwv9VdWPK8\">court<\/a>. These policies were enacted over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/posteverything\/wp\/2018\/10\/25\/feature\/civil-servants-said-separating-families-was-illegal-the-administration-ignored-us\/?utm_term=.08f10bb46db8\">objections <\/a>of career federal officials. The Trump administration then took months to reunify families and gave out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2018\/10\/12\/trump-administrations-questionable-data-family-separations\/?utm_term=.19c22f6c4ea7\">inaccurate <\/a>data about how many children had been reunified. Most recently, the Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/0c62b088c27147b0a6055d1e8394a3af\">reported<\/a> that workers at a tent city detention camp holding 2,300 teenagers in the Texas desert did not use FBI fingerprint background checks for its workers, increasing the risk that people with criminal histories could have contact with the boys and girls between 13 and 17 years old.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Used tear gas on children, and then said it wasn&#8217;t not so bad:<\/strong>\u00a0After U.S. agents used tear gas in a confrontation with a crowd of migrants at the border with Mexico, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/president-trump-defends-use-of-safe-tear-gas-as-kirstjen-nielsen-claims-600-migrants-are-criminals\/\">claimed<\/a> that &#8220;the tear gas is a very minor form of the tear gas itself&#8221; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/politics\/2018\/11\/26\/mexico-tear-gas-investigation-trump-border-protection-miguel-marquez-dnt-ebof-vpx.cnn\">denied<\/a> it was used on children despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/photographer-reveals-story-behind-iconic-photo-fleeing-migrants-mexico-border-n940271\">photos<\/a> of children running away from tear gas used by federal agents.<\/li>\n<li><b>Left undocumented children and young adults in limbo: <\/b>Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/speech\/attorney-general-sessions-delivers-remarks-daca\">announced<\/a>\u00a0he would end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which has curbed enforcement of immigration laws against undocumented immigrants \u00a0who came to the United States as children. Trump claimed he supported a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/jan\/09\/trump-daca-immigration-reform-congress-dreamers\">bill of love<\/a>\u201d to protect the Dreamers, but didn\u2019t support actual legislation. Instead, Trump demanded strict anti-immigrant measures such as his unnecessary border wall proposal. As a result, the issue remains unresolved, and about 800,000 Dreamers remain in limbo.<\/li>\n<li><b>Tried to deprive immigrants of social services:<\/b> The Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/22\/us\/politics\/immigrants-green-card-public-aid.html\">wants <\/a>to deny green cards and visas to legal immigrants who use federal benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps and housing assistance. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/10\/opinion\/immigration-trump-health-public-charge.html\">cruel proposal<\/a> could cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/disparities-policy\/issue-brief\/estimated-impacts-of-the-proposed-public-charge-rule-on-immigrants-and-medicaid\/\">fear and uncertainty <\/a>for immigrant families and result in <a href=\"http:\/\/files.kff.org\/attachment\/Issue-Brief-Estimated-Impacts-of-the-Proposed-Public-Charge-Rule-on-Immigrants-and-Medicaid\">millions <\/a>of eligible children going without food assistance, health coverage and more. Immigration officials would have latitude to to reject immigrants\u2019 applications due to low incomes, deterring immigrants from legal paths to citizenship and \u00a0causing immigrants and their family members to forego critical benefits for fear of the consequences.<\/li>\n<li><b>Discussed ending the right to citizenship for children of immigrant parents:\u00a0<\/b>Trump said he would issue an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-eyeing-executive-order-to-end-citizenship-for-children-of-noncitizens-born-on-us-soil\/2018\/10\/30\/66892050-dc29-11e8-b3f0-62607289efee_story.html?utm_term=.824b36ce1f66\">executive order<\/a> ending the right to U.S. citizenship for children born in the United States. This unconstitutional move was even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/10\/30\/662043904\/trump-says-he-will-void-birthright-citizenship-law-through-executive-order\">dismissed <\/a>by House Speaker Paul Ryan.<\/li>\n<li><b>Explored rolling back housing segregation rules:<\/b>\u00a0Enduring patterns of residential segregation in the U.S. have made it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/social-mobility-memos\/2018\/01\/11\/raj-chetty-in-14-charts-big-findings-on-opportunity-and-mobility-we-should-know\/\">difficult <\/a>for low-income children to climb the economic ladder, but the Trump administration is considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/ben-carson-moves-roll-back-obama-era-fair-housing-rule-n900366\">getting rid of <\/a>a rule requiring local governments to combat residential segregation or lose federal funding. This rule, enacted by the Obama administration in 2015, is designed to promote low-income housing in wealthier areas that have long resisted such housing. Without this regulation, housing segregation and discriminatory practices will persist, making it far harder for low-income children to advance in American society.<\/li>\n<li><b>Killed internet privacy rules:<\/b> Just two months after being sworn in, Trump signed legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/how-congress-dismantled-federal-internet-privacy-rules\/2017\/05\/29\/7ad06e14-2f5b-11e7-8674-437ddb6e813e_story.html?utm_term=.c7440c8c4dc5\">getting rid of<\/a> regulations banning internet companies from selling customers\u2019 browsing histories without their permission. Without this rule, internet companies will be able to target children with ads. Federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/enforcement\/rules\/rulemaking-regulatory-reform-proceedings\/childrens-online-privacy-protection-rule\">rules<\/a>\u00a0already\u00a0prohibit data collection from children under 13 without parental consent, but teenagers are ripe targets for invasive advertising.<\/li>\n<li><b>Signed a tax bill that shafted low-income families:<\/b> \u00a0Trump and \u00a0Congressional Republicans did the bidding of big donors by enacting \u00a0massive tax cuts for large corporations and wealthy individuals. After passing these irresponsible cuts, Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/business\/wp\/2018\/06\/19\/house-gop-plan-would-cut-medicare-social-security-to-balance-budget\/?utm_term=.7def074b6800\">lawmakers <\/a>and Trump\u2019s top economic adviser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/09\/18\/larry-kudlows-entitlement-reform-talk-sparks-democratic-attacks.html\">pivoted <\/a>to talk of cutting back on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps and other programs claiming that the government can\u2019t afford them.<\/li>\n<li><b>Threatened drastic budget cuts: <\/b>The Trump administration has repeatedly threatened, but failed to enact, draconian cuts to federal programs that benefit kids. After lawmakers reached a bipartisan compromise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/08\/us\/politics\/congress-budget-deal-vote.html\">budget deal<\/a> that provided a huge spending boost to the military as well as social programs, Trump quickly got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/plum-line\/wp\/2018\/03\/23\/why-is-trump-raging-about-the-budget-because-democrats-got-most-of-what-they-wanted\/?utm_term=.a9d29eaa52fa\">grumpy<\/a> about the deal he had just signed. He pushed for brutal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/5\/8\/17316126\/rescission-request-omb-trump-fiscal-budget\">cuts <\/a>to children\u2019s health insurance, and other spending that lawmakers already approved. Thankfully, this plan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/5\/8\/17316126\/rescission-request-omb-trump-fiscal-budget\">failed<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Failed to prevent lead poisoning:<\/b> The Trump administration\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2017\/04\/05\/trumps-epa-moves-to-defund-programs-that-protect-children-from-lead\/?utm_term=.41905b0f8f94\">budget<\/a> proposed to eliminate two federal programs that aim to reduce children\u2019s risk of exposure to lead paint, which impedes brain development. It then took a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/27\/us\/epa-lead-paint.html\">court order<\/a> to get the administration to revise federal standards for lead paint and lead dust exposure. These new proposed rules include tighter standards for lead dust on floors and window sills but still put children <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/health\/2018\/07\/18\/epa-dust-lead-hazard-standards\/\">at risk<\/a> by failing to include tighter standards for lead in paint and soil.<\/li>\n<li><b>Ousted the top EPA official for children\u2019s health:<\/b> The Trump administration placed Dr. Ruth Etzel, director of the EPA\u2019s Office of Children\u2019s Health Protection, on administrative leave in September 2018. \u00a0Etzel, a pediatrician and renowned child health expert, told CNN she suspected that the administration objected to a major lead poisoning report nearing completion. \u201cMaybe saving children doesn\u2019t matter anymore,\u201d Etzel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/17\/politics\/epa-childrens-health-ruth-etzel\/index.html?ofs=fbia\">told CNN.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIf you watch their actions and not just listen to their words, you find out they\u2019re not walking the walk that they would be walking if they really wanted to eliminate childhood lead poisoning.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Delayed an update of standards for lead in drinking water: <\/b>The Trump administration has delayed new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/dwreginfo\/lead-and-copper-rule\">federals standards<\/a> for lead and copper in drinking water. After several delays, the EPA now <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/years-flint-lead-public-health-crisis\/story?id=58860151\">says<\/a> it plans to release these proposed standards next year. Meanwhile, more cities are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/30\/nyregion\/newark-lead-water-pipes.html\">facing<\/a> public health crises over lead levels in their tap water.<\/li>\n<li><b>Refused to ban a pesticide that causes brain damage in kids<\/b><b>:<\/b> Trump\u2019s EPA refused to ban chlorpyrifos, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2017\/03\/29\/trump-epa-declines-to-ban-pesticide-that-obama-had-proposed-outlawing\/?utm_term=.ae6fad41011a\">\u00a0brain-damaging pesticide<\/a> sold by Dow Chemical Co., which <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/dow-wants-trump-administration-to-ignore-presticide-risk-study-f56da15ddffe\/\">contributed $1 million<\/a> to Trump\u2019s inauguration and whose CEO met with Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/media\/press-releases\/charlottesville-president-trump-had-more-300-meetings-corporate-executives\">several times<\/a>. Though a federal appeals court has now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/09\/us\/politics\/chlorpyrifos-pesticide-ban-epa-court.html\">ordered <\/a>the Trump EPA to ban the pesticide, the Trump administration hasn\u2019t stopped carrying water for chemical companies and agriculture giants. Trump\u2019s Department of Justice has <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/408173-trump-admin-appeals-ruling-ordering-epa-to-ban-pesticide\">asked <\/a>for a rehearing of this case with a larger panel of judges. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue even asserted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/press-releases\/2018\/09\/24\/secretary-perdue-statement-doj-filing-9th-circuit-chlorpyrifos\">banning <\/a>the dangerous chemical would prevent farmers from using and \u201ceffective and economical crop protection tool.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Pushed to let teenage farm workers handle pesticide<\/b><b>s: <\/b>The Trump administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2017\/12\/19\/2017-27302\/pesticides-certification-of-pesticide-applicators-rule-reconsideration-of-the-minimum-age\">solicited public comment<\/a> on whether to repeal an Obama-era requirement barring children under 18 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/trumps-epa-could-expose-child-workers-to-dangerous-pesticides_us_5a565e90e4b0a300f9054405\">handling <\/a>pesticides on farms. This limitation, enacted in 2015, is one of the few national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/food\/2018\/01\/trumps-epa-teens-spray-farm-pesticides\/\">regulations <\/a>on child farm labor and is especially important because early exposure to pesticides can cause cancer and neurological damage.<\/li>\n<li><b>Dialed back protections for people who live near chemical plants:\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreffectivegov.org\/sites\/default\/files\/kids-in-danger-zones-report.pdf\">One in three kids<\/a> attends school close to a dangerous chemical facility. But the\u00a0Trump administration tried to delay enforcement of rules designed to ensure communities are prepared for chemical plant disasters. Trump&#8217;s EPA even proposed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/earthjustice.org\/news\/press\/2018\/trump-administration-reveals-plan-to-revoke-health-safety-protections\">delete<\/a>\u00a0important\u00a0accident-prevention regulations. Mercury pollution is particularly hazardous to kids, damaging the nervous system of children and fetuses.<\/li>\n<li><b>Ignored the health benefits of environmental rules:<\/b> The Trump argument has argued, absurdly, that the government <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-a-minor-change-to-how-epa-makes-rules-could-radically-reduce-environmental-protection-98042\">shouldn\u2019t even consider<\/a>\u00a0health benefits \u2014 such as curbing soot in the air \u2014 when deciding whether to go ahead with federal rules, arguing that these benefits are an unintended effect of the rule.\u00a0 Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler, a former coal lobbyist, seemed oblivious to\u00a0the real public benefits to the health of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/energy-environment\/2018\/10\/01\/rollback-mercury-rule-trump-could-revamp-how-government-values-human-health\/?utm_term=.a5081fcbfdf2\">vulnerable populations<\/a> like children and the elderly, calling such benefits\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/energy-environment\/2018\/10\/01\/rollback-mercury-rule-trump-could-revamp-how-government-values-human-health\/?utm_term=.8dac4975305d\">fuzzy math<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Closed a federal office that focused on children\u2019s health: <\/b>The EPA <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/energy-environment\/375725-major-epa-reorganization-will-end-science-research-program\">closed<\/a> the National Center for Environmental Research, which provides millions of dollars in grants each year and runs fellowships to study the effects of chemicals on children\u2019s health. Though EPA officials claimed the research grants would still be funded, staffers at the center were reassigned.<\/li>\n<li><b>Cut off funding for a teen pregnancy prevention program<\/b>: The Trump administration defunded a program that uses evidence-based initiatives to reduce teen pregnancy rates, but then was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/02\/politics\/hhs-teen-pregnancy-program-dc-district-court\/index.html\">blocked <\/a>from doing so by a federal judge.<\/li>\n<li><b>Tried to get rid of families\u2019 health care:<\/b> \u00a0The White House and Republican lawmakers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/09\/27\/politics\/bruised-republicans-regroup-after-obamacare-repeal-fail\/index.html\">spent months trying<\/a> to repeal the Affordable Care Act.\u00a0The 2010 health care law benefited low-income children tremendously, spurring parents who were newly eligible for health care to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthaffairs.org\/doi\/10.1377\/hlthaff.2017.0347\">sign up<\/a> their children for existing health care programs and use more\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/140\/6\/e20170953\">preventive care.<\/a>\u00a0Thankfully, the Trump administration failed in its effort to repeal Obamacare, but has still worked to harm children and families by <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/08\/31\/news\/economy\/obamacare-trump-advertising\/index.html\">slashing spending<\/a> on advertising for Obamacare signups and trying to sabotage Obamacare by getting rid of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/12\/20\/trump-individual-mandate-repeal-tax-bill-308286\">mandate <\/a>that Americans carry health insurance. Under Trump, the Justice Department even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-affordable-care-act.html?module=inline\">declined <\/a>to defend the law\u2019s ban on denying coverage to people with pre-existing medical conditions or charging them higher rates.<\/li>\n<li><b>Allowed health insurers to sell skimpy insurance plans: <\/b>Children and families will be harmed by the Trump administration\u2019s decision to allow health insurance companies to sell junk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/01\/us\/politics\/trump-short-term-health-insurance.html\">health care plans<\/a>\u00a0that lack coverage for such essentials as prescriptions and quality maternity care. Those with these plans may find themselves responsible for significant expenses, forcing them to go into debt and even bankruptcy. While these inexpensive plans could target healthy young adults who use little healthcare, but children and families tend to use healthcare more often and would be harmed.<\/li>\n<li><b>Undermined efforts to encourage breastfeeding: <\/b>Despite the consensus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/09\/well\/breastfeeding-trump-resolution.html\">recommendation <\/a>of public health experts and doctors, the Trump administration sought to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/08\/health\/world-health-breastfeeding-ecuador-trump.html\"> dilute<\/a> a World Health Organization resolution favoring breastfeeding over the use of infant formula, helping out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/science-and-health\/2018\/7\/10\/17548028\/trump-baby-formula-breastfeeding-mothers-health\">infant formula industry.<\/a><b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Failed to ensure food safety in trade negotiations:<\/b> The new North American trade deal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/sites\/default\/files\/nafta_2.0_text_analysis.pdf\">includes\u00a0<\/a>restraints on domestic food safety and inspection programs and requires the U.S. to accept food imports that do not meet U.S. safety or inspection standards. The trade pact also maintains limits on food inspection at the border and adds new rules limiting audits of countries\u2019 food safety programs. It also fails to fix rollbacks of U.S. food labeling policies that previously were challenged by Canada and Mexico, including country-of-origin labels for meat and dolphin-safe labels for tuna.<\/li>\n<li><b>Appointed an opponent of product-safety regulations to run government\u2019s product safety watchdog: <\/b>Trump\u2019s acting head of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, <a href=\"https:\/\/corporatepresidency.org\/is-trumps-product-safety-regulator-protecting-consumers\/\">Anne Marie Buerkle<\/a>, is a former right-wing congresswoman with a record of opposing strong mandatory health and safety regulations. Trump\u2019s Labor Department apparently has no problem with young workers operating dangerous patient lifts on their own, without training or assistance from an adult worker.
