{"id":106481,"date":"2025-01-07T09:16:30","date_gmt":"2025-01-07T14:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/?post_type=news&#038;p=106481"},"modified":"2025-01-10T13:38:36","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T18:38:36","slug":"coming-soon-another-dropoff-in-corporate-crime-enforcement","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/news\/coming-soon-another-dropoff-in-corporate-crime-enforcement\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming Soon: Another Dropoff in Corporate Crime Enforcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 Public Citizen launched a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/article\/corporate-enforcement-trump-tracker\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> today to watchdog federal investigations and cases against alleged corporate criminals \u2013 cases that are at risk of being abandoned, weakened, or scaled back under the Trump administration. President-elect Donald Trump may talk tough on crime, but Public Citizen\u2019s research shows that the last time he took office, criminal enforcement against corporations plummeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCorporate crime enforcement fell during Trump\u2019s first term, even as his administration pursued \u2018tough\u2019 policies against immigrants, protestors, and low-level offenders,\u201d said <\/span><b>Rick Claypool, a research director for Public Citizen, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who compiled the tracker. \u201cIt\u2019s likely Trump\u2019s second term will see a similar or worse dropoff in enforcement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of today, Public Citizen\u2019s Corporate Enforcement Tracker includes a nearly 250 investigations and cases against more than 200 distinct corporations. About 16% of these companies have known ties with the Trump administration. They or their executives have either contributed to his inauguration, or Trump has nominated their former employees, investors, and lobbyists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the corporations facing investigations or enforcement are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sixteen that have contributed to Trump\u2019s inaugural fund or whose CEOs have contributed: Amazon, Apple, AT&amp;T, Bank of America, Coinbase, Ford, Goldman Sachs, Kraken, Meta, OpenAI, Pfizer, Ripple, Robinhood, Stanley Black &amp; Decker, Toyota, and Uber;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four helmed by Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and X (formerly Twitter);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four that received notable investments from venture capitalist David Sacks, who Trump has named to be the White House AI and Crypto Czar; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two lobbying clients formerly represented by Trump\u2019s attorney general nominee Pamela Bondi: Amazon and Republic Services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The five corporations with the most federal investigations or cases against them are Tesla (7), Amazon (6), Pfizer (5), Wells Fargo (4), and SpaceX (4). The five federal agencies with the most investigations and cases in the database are the U.S. Department of Justice (63), the National Labor Relations Board (50), the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (42), the Federal Trade Commission (32), and the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (14).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tracker is not comprehensive, but is intended to highlight the most significant actions and cases. The data has been gleaned from public sources, including corporate filings, agency disclosures, and news reports.
